Iran Press/ Europe: Hamid Baeidinejad, Iran's ambassador to the UK, in his tweet on Tuesday 18 August, noting that 67 years have passed since the US coup against the national government of 'Mohammad Mossadegh' in Iran, said: "Britain played an important role in the coup, of which several documents have been published."
Hamid Baeidinejad went on to remind that the British government has so far refused even a simple official apology to the Iranian people, adding: "Isn't it time to apologize and make up for the past?"
The American-British coup of August 1953, which led to the fall of the legitimate government of Iran at the time (Mossadegh's government), commemorates a critical period in Iran's political history before the victory of the Islamic Revolution.
The August 19 coup, part of a series of US-British interventions in Iran during the victory of the nationalization movement in the Iranian oil industry, took place at a time when the International Court of Justice had ruled in Iran's favor over British-Iranian oil deals.
In recent years, new documents have been published about foreign interference in the coup d'état of 28 August, and some US officials have even acknowledged the direct role of the US and the UK in the coup. 207/219
