Russian envoy: What US wants to achieve after derailing of JCPOA?

Russian Permanent Representative to International Organizations in Vienna, Mikhail Ulyanov wrote message addressed US officials and asked after derailing of JCPOA, what US wants to achieve?

Iran Press/Europe: Russian envoy, Mikhail Ulyanov wrote in his twitter account “Strong impression that US policy on Iran is not well calculated. If Washington succeeds with a derailing of JCPOA the Additional Protocol would cease to apply. As a result, the Iranian nuclear program would become much less transparent. Is that what the US wants to achieve? What for?

In a tweet released on Saturday, Mikhail Ulyanov described the opponents of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) as helpless and ignorant.

Earlier, in a separate message, Mikhail Ulyanov said, "US claims that it retains the status of a Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) participant, as well as relevant rights."

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has recently claimed that the US is still a participant to the United Nations Security Council Resolution 2231 and can request an extension of Iran's arms embargo based on Article 11 of the Resolution.

With its unilateral exit from Iran nuclear deal two years ago, the United States violated its commitments under the 2015 multilateral accord and a subsequent UNSC Resolution 2231 as well.

Under the resolution, an arms embargo on Iran, as well as an arms export ban, is set to lift on 18 October 2020, five years after the JCPOA  Adoption Day. The resolution also said travel restrictions on officials and entities involved in Iran’s nuclear and missile programs will expire in October.

However, a renewal of the arms embargo is likely to meet opposition from Russia and China, which have veto power in the Security Council.
