A knifeman killed one person and injured four others, two of them critically, before being shot dead by police in central Paris. Police are treating the incident as a terrorist attack.

The attacker struck in one of the most popular areas of Paris, near the celebrated opera house and theatres.

Pierre Gaudin, a spokesman for the police prefecture, said the man attacked shortly before 9 pm on Saturday night.

“One person has died of his injuries,” Gaudin said, adding that two others had been seriously injured and taken to hospital.

French officials are saying that a total of four people were wounded in this attack.

The Daesh (also known as ISIS ) terrorist group has already claimed the responsibility for this deadly knife attack.

According to security sources, the attack happened close to the city's main opera house in an area full of restaurants.

An eye witness to the attack said:  "The attacker had around 30 years old. He had European clothing style"  said.

Referring the attacker as a "soldier" of Daesh (or ISIS ), the Takfiri terrorist group, Daesh claimed that the incident was in response to bombing of its' positions in Syria and Iraq.

Following the incident, French President Emmanuel Macron tweeted that his country "once again pays the price of blood" but stressed that France would "yield not an inch to the enemies of freedom."

Paris prosecutor Francois Molins said the assault was being investigated as a terrorist attack.

The killing comes as France is under a constant threat of terrorism. A string of Takfiri attacks have claimed the lives of over 245 people around France in the past three years.

Nearly 120 people were killed on November 13, 2015 after being held hostage by gunmen at the Bataclan concert hall in central Paris.

Scores of people were reportedly killed in other attacks across Paris, for which the Takfiri group, Daesh (also known as ISIS ) has claimed responsibility.
