Thousands of mourners gathered in Tehran in the early hours of Saturday morning as Iran began a week-long funeral procession for the Martyred Leader Seyyed Ali Hosseini Khamenei.

Seyyed Ali Hosseini Khamenei was an Iranian politician and Shia religious leader who served as the second Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran from 1989 until 2026. He was assassinated in a U.S.-Israeli airstrike on 28 February, 2026. Owing to the war imposed on Iran and the security situation that followed, funeral ceremonies were postponed for several months before arrangements could be made for a nationwide farewell.

The official funeral procession will last for one week. The ceremonies began with three days of public mourning and commemorative events in Tehran, where thousands of mourners, government officials, military commanders, foreign dignitaries, and religious scholars are paying their respect. The procession will then continue to Qom, where senior clerics and seminary students along with other people will participate in memorial services.

On Wednesday, funeral procession will be held in Iraq and will conclude in Mashhad, where the Martyred Leader will be laid to rest at the holy shrine of Imam Reza. The burial ceremony is expected to be attended by millions of mourners from across Iran and other Muslim countries.
