Commentary (IP) - The spokeswoman for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy of the European Union announced the readiness of the union to expand the level of cooperation with the Islamic Republic of Iran with the new Iranian President elected.

Iran PressCommentary: Nabila Massrali released the message on her X account: " We take note of the results of the presidential elections in Iran and congratulate President elect Massoud Pezeshkian. We are ready to engage with the new government in line with EU policy of critical engagement. "

Massrali's message is one of the numerous messages of congratulation that were sent to the new President-elect of the Islamic Republic, Masoud Pezeshkian who won the 14th Iranian presidential election with 16,384,403 votes on July 5.

She had said before that the main priority of the EU was the facilitation of returning to the JCPOA and the full implementation of it.

The EU has always emphasized the expansion of relations with Iran due to Iran's superior position in the Middle East region and its geopolitical, political, economic, and energy, which has played an important role in achieving the JCPOA nuclear agreement.

Nevertheless, the US' unilateral withdrawal from the JCPOA and the imposition of two-phase sanctions on Iran in August and November 2018 and then President Donal Trump's request to Europe to join the anti-Iranian campaign, left the European Union to tackle two issues; one to preserve the JCPOA and the other to counter Washington's pressures.

From the point of view of the EU senior officials, the European body must prove its trustability through the continuation of cooperation with Iran so that it manages to help preserve global security; therefore, even when its partner, the US, withdraws from the JCPOA, Europe still considers itself committed to the agreement.

Unlike the US, which claims that Iran has not complied with the JCPOA terms and does not consider it an efficient and effective agreement to control Iran's nuclear activities, the Europeans believe that not only Iran has fulfilled its commitments to the JCPOA but also the agreement has acted well in terms of its goal which was to prevent international tensions. In fact, the European Union considered the JCPOA an example of a multilateral agreement that can be used as a model for the settlement of other international disputes.

Given the victory of Massoud Pezeshkian in the Iranian presidential elections and his emphasis on the revival of the JCPOA, it is expected that the grounds for the deepening of Tehran-EU relations will be prepared.

In addition, the 9th Iranian president is taking office as Iran's relations with other countries in the region and the world are expanding and it is expected that the trend will go on and encompass the European countries.

Emphasizing the expansion of relations with all countries in the world, Masoud Pezeshkian, the new president-elect of Iran, seems to seriously continue the path of the former late President Ebrahim Raisi's policy. The policy is followed as peaceful coexistence and strengthening relations with different countries has always been one of the principles of the Islamic Republic's foreign policy.
