Huge turnout in Baghdad, second slap to US

Millions of Iraqis staged a demonstration in Baghdad on Friday 24 January and called for US military forces to leave their country.

Iran Press/Middle East: There are a few points to note about the January 24 million-man demonstrations in Iraq, which is a second slap-in-the-face for the United States in the last 20 days:

First, Friday's demonstration proved that Iran is not the only country to respond to the assassination of resistance leaders, especially the assassination of Lieutenant General Qassem Soleimani, the former commander of the Quds Force of the Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC), and the United States will face the consequences of its lawless and reckless actions across West Asia.

Second, these demonstrations show that the resistance groups in Iraq have high popular support. In the last 20 days alone, their power which originates from the people has been proven twice; The first time in the funeral of the Resistance Commanders, and this time in the massive multi-million anti-American demonstrations which have set the stage for the US military to leave Iraq.

Third, the Iraqi people's national rallies and marches are the second slap-in-the-face of the United States in the last 20 days. The first one was Iran's missile strike on US military bases in Iraq, particularly the Ain al-Assad airbase in al-Anbar province in western Iraq on 8 January 2020.

Fourth, the impact of the slap is so severe for the United States that mainstream Western media which covered minor developments in Iraq in recent days (especially the news that was against Iran and resistance groups), refused to cover the million-man demonstrations of the Iraqi people, effectively censoring this great event.

Fifth, although some media and personalities have tried to limit the recent demonstrations to the Shias only, the demonstrators were not only Shias but also Sunni Muslims as well. Sheikh Khalid Abdul-Wahab al-Mulla, the head of the Iraqi Scholars Group, who won the International Peace Prize for 2012, tweeted: "The US withdrawal from Iraq is a moral and religious obligation because the presence of US Forces causes sedition and corruption and looting of the country's wealth."

Sixth, the demonstrations by the Iraqi people showed that US President Donald Trump has no understanding of the developments in the West Asian region, especially the developments relating to resistance groups. Donald Trump thinks all west Asian countries are like Saudi Arabia, which he impolitely and unflatteringly describes as a "Milky Cow".

It should be noted that many Iraqi demonstrators carried placards during the massive 24 January national rallies and marches, saying: "Iraq is not Saudi Arabia."
