Al-Khalifa regime's high court upholds five-year sentence against prominent human rights activist Nabeel Rajab.

Iran Press/ Middle East: Bahrain's high court upheld a five-year jail sentence against prominent activist Nabeel Rajab on Monday for criticizing Saudi Arabia’s air strikes in Yemen and accusing Bahrain’s prison authorities of torture, his lawyer said. 

"The Court of Cassation rejected the appeal and upheld the sentence of five years in prison against Nabeel Rajab for his tweets," his lawyer, Mohamed Al Jishi, told Reuters by phone.

On 21 Feb, 2018 Bahrain court has sentenced prominent human rights activist Nabeel Rajab to five years in prison over tweets deemed critical of the Manama regime and the deadly Saudi-led war against Yemen.

On Feb 21, 2018 Rajab’s Twitter account posted a photo showing him smiling and flashing the victory sign after the verdict was announced.

According to judicial source Rajab was found 'guilty of spreading false rumors and insulting a neighboring state Saudi Arabia'.

Rajab was already serving a two-year sentence over a January 2015 news interview in which he said that the Bahraini regime was torturing political prisoners.

Separately on February, an appeals court upheld the death sentences handed to six Bahrainis and stripped two others of their citizenship.

Since February 14, 2011, Bahraini people have been holding peaceful protest rallies on an almost daily basis, demanding that the Al Khalifah family relinquish power and let a just system representing all people be established.

They have also been complaining about widespread discrimination against the Shia majority in the kingdom.
