Zarif: Pompeo would better read UNSCR 2231; US has NO standing

Tehran (IP) - Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif in his latest tweet released on Tuesday stressed that US Secretary of State pretends UNSCR 2231 is independent of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), advise him to read the UN Resolution.

Iran PressIran News:  “JCPOA is PART of 2231. That's why it's 104 pages—& why he’s not read it,“ reiterated Zarif.

Iran’s top diplomat highlighted that “The US violated it & prevented others from complying.”

“ US has NO standing”, Zarif concluded.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo recently claimed that Washington was a participant in Resolution 2231 and could call for an extension of Iran's arms embargo.

The UN Security Council's anti-Iran arms embargo was imposed in 2006 and 2007 to ban arms sales to Iran and arms exports from Iran.

The US officials claimed that they have the right to use what they call their legal right to extend Iran's arms embargo as members of UNSCR 2231 or the UN Security Council.

Iran has vehemently rejected this self-proclaimed interpretation of the United States, stressing that the United States has ended its participation in the JCPOA  in accordance with its President's explicit statement.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Seyyed Abbass Mousavi, On May4, in response to IP’s question about the US’ plan to extend arm embargo against Iran based on resolution 2231,  said that the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) had various achievements, and the US aim by the illegal withdrawal of JCPOA was to eliminate Nuclear deal achievements.

US President Trump unilaterally withdrew the United States from the nuclear deal in 2018 and has re-imposed harsh and illegal sanctions on Iran.

The New York Times on May 27 revealed a US ploy to pressure the United Nations Security Council to extend an arms embargo on Tehran, which is due to expire in October.

Now the issue is a UN Security Council resolution that was passed in 2015 in support of the nuclear deal between Iran and several world powers.

Under the resolution, an arms embargo on Iran, as well as an arms export ban, is set to lift Oct. 18. The resolution also said travel restrictions on officials and entities involved in Iran’s nuclear and missile programs will expire in October.

However, a renewal of the arms embargo is likely to meet opposition from Russia and China, which have veto power in the Security Council.
