Europe (IP) - European Union Minister for Foreign Affairs said that the EU supports Iran and Venezuela in their requests for emergency funding from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to fight against coronavirus.

Iran PressIran News: Speaking at a virtual press conference, Josep Borrell noted that trade and humanitarian cooperation with these countries, including food and pharmaceuticals, was important and emphasized that Iran and Venezuela were in difficulty mainly because of US sanctions.

Borrell also stated that the EU is preparing to send €20 million worth of essential goods to Iran in the coming weeks.

Iranian Central Bank chief Abdolnaser Hemmati in a letter addressed to the head of IMF, Kristalina Georgieva, has requested five billion US dollars from the RFI emergency fund to help the country's fight against the coronavirus. 

At the same time, Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif asked the IMF for emergency funding to help Iran's fight against the coronavirus outbreak.
