Tehran (IP) - "A ballot box is a place where the Iranian people say their word to the world, and we have to get the message of the people and respect them," the first Vice President Eshaq Jahangiri said.

Iran Press/Iran news: After visiting the interior ministry's election headquarters and casting his ballot, the First Vice President Eshaq Jahangiri said, "Fortunately, news from across the country indicates that the presence of people is like the previous elections and that is a good and meaningful presence, and we hope that the Parliament as one of the important and influential bodies of the country will play a very decisive role in the affairs of the country."

Jahangiri noted Americans have done everything they can against the Iranian people, not just in the past year, but in the past 41 years of the revolution.

"The US has taken inhumane measures, such as the downing of an Iranian passenger plane with 290 on board, and have provided serious assistance to our enemy in our war against Saddam's invasion," the first vice president said.

Jahangiri went on to say that, before the revolution in the coup d'état on August 28, 1953, the US supported the former regime and the last US cruel against our people was the assassination of Lt. Gen. Soleimani, who was an important military official and influential in internal and international affairs. It is clear that the Iranian people pay no attention to such a cruel enemy."

Millions of Iranians are casting their votes to elect new MPs for the 290-seat parliament as well as members of the Assembly of Experts.

Polling stations in 207 constituencies across Iran opened at 8:00 am local time. After the polls close, counting will begin straight away.

Nearly 58 million people are eligible to vote on preselected lists of candidates for Iran's 11th parliamentary elections.

The Iranian Parliament, officially known as the Islamic Consultative Assembly, is a 290-seat legislative body with 207 constituencies. Its members are elected every four years, and former and current members can be re-elected.

On the other hand, the Assembly of Experts of the Leadership is a deliberative body of 88 theologians tasked with choosing the Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Members of the assembly are elected every eight years.
