US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo (R)

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that Washington will continue its maximum pressure policy through the adoption of further economic sanctions, according to media reports.

Iran PressAmerica: He made the remarks to reporters following imposing new sanctions on Iran's civilian airline and shipping network on Wednesday.

Earlier in the day, US Defense Secretary Mark Esper defended his country's policy of economic terrorism in a bid to force Iran to sit at the negotiations table.

Last year, the republican US President Donald Trump announced the unilateral exit of his government from the 2015 nuclear agreement with Iran reached by the democratic government of President Barack Obama.

In response to re-imposition of US nuclear sanctions and Europe's failure to provide Iran with advantages under the agreement, Tehran started incremental scale-back from the deal in2019 by starting uranium enrichment in its peaceful nuclear program which it had halted to observe the deal.
