Railway cooperation between Iran and members of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) have entered into a new phase.

Iran Press/Iran News: The improvement of Iran's status among the members of CIS led to a closer relationship between the two sides.

Head of the Railways of the Islamic Republic of Iran (RAI) made the remarks in an exclusive interview on Wednesday with Iran Press News Agency in Tabriz, Iran Press reported.

Iran's status improved from the observer member to the associate member of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) in the seventieth meeting of CIS council.

The seventieth meeting of CIS council took place last week in Finland.

Commenting on the latest condition of the railway project connecting Iran's Astara to the Republic of Azerbaijan's Astara, he said that completion of the north to the south corridor is among the priorities of RAI.

The first phase of a railway project connecting Iran's Astara to the Republic of Azerbaijan's Astara, and its terminal, was inaugurated on Mar.27 at a special ceremony attended by senior officials of both countries.

Iran and Azerbaijan agreed in early 2016 to develop economic cooperation through railway links.

The port city of Astara with a population of 91,000 is located west of Gilan province and has a 38-kilometer land border and a 15-kilometer maritime border with the Republic of Azerbaijan.
