Iran Press/ Europe: German Chancellor Angela Merkel has gone into quarantine after being informed that a doctor who administered a vaccine to her has tested positive for the new coronavirus.
Merkel's spokesman said the German chancellor was informed about the doctor's test shortly after holding a news conference Sunday announcing new measures to curb the spread of the virus.
The death toll from the coronavirus pandemic continued its relentless rise in Europe on Sunday with Italy announcing 651 dead in one day, bringing its total to 5,476.
It was an increase of 13.5 percent but down from Saturday's figure when 793 people died.
French coronavirus death toll rises by 112 to 674
France’s coronavirus death toll rose by 112 on Sunday to 674, senior health official Jerome Salomon said, with the number of confirmed infections increased by 1,559 to 16,018.
Other European countries have seen steep rises in infections and deaths, and the region has become the new epicenter of the crisis.
As well as Italy, Spain, France, Germany and the UK now have thousands of confirmed cases each.
Coronavirus has been spreading rapidly across the world, affecting more than 160 countries and claiming more than 13,700 lives.
There are more than 328,000 confirmed cases worldwide and Europe is now at the epicenter of the crisis, with increasing numbers of cases and deaths.
