Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Geng Shuang

Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Geng Shuang said Beijing supports proposals on the preservation of the 2015 multi-lateral nuclear agreement with Iran known as the Comprehensive Joint Plan of Action (JCPOA).

Iran Press/Asia: "China supports all proposals that will help ameliorate the current situation and preserve the JCPOA," he said at a regular press conference on Monday commenting on Russian acting Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov's suggestion to hold a meeting on JCPOA at the level of political directors of the deal's signatories to understand the future fate of the agreement.

"As comprehensive strategic partners of coordination for a new era and staunch supporters of the JCPOA, China and Russia have been in close communication with each other on the Iranian nuclear issue," he added.

The US withdrew unilaterally from the deal in 2018 and re-imposed sanctions on Iran. Tehran took retaliatory steps against the US move and following European sides' lack of action, scaled back its obligations under the deal.

Geng urged the remaining signatories -- China, France, Germany, Russia, and the UK --to "take concrete measures to restore the balance between rights and obligations" in the JCPOA. and to uphold and implement the deal.

"The JCPOA, endorsed and adopted by the UN Security Council, is an important outcome of multilateral diplomacy, an important pillar for the international non-proliferation system and peace and stability in the Middle East, and a significant part of the international order based on international law. It should be upheld and implemented."

The Chinese official called on all parties to the JCPOA to "remain calm and restrained, resolve differences through dialogue and negotiations" under the JCPOA Joint Commission.
