Zarif slams EU3 for subservience to US, failure to honour JCPOA

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has lashed out at the three European parties for not abiding by their commitments under the JCPOA and for 'selling their integrity' for fear of US’ bullying tactics.

Iran PressAsia: Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif on Thursday criticized the Europeans for their failure to live up to their commitments under the landmark 2015 nuclear deal, also known as Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

In a thread on his Twitter account on Wednesday night, Zarif debunked the claim that Britain, France, and Germany have stuck to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action.

"Britain, France, and Germany, three parties to the Iranian deal, claim that Europe has kept its obligations under JCPOA, however, in reality, they have not imported Iran's oil and have not facilitated Iran's international banking actions," Zarif tweeted.

In a new post on Thursday 16 January, the top Iranian diplomat provided further evidence of EU3’s policy of appeasement vis-a-vis US President Donald Trump.

"Appeasement confirmed. E3 sold out remnants of JCPOA to avoid new Trump tariffs. It won't work my friends. You only whet his appetite. Remember your high school bully? If you want to sell your integrity, go ahead. But do not assume high moral and legal ground. You don't have it," Zarif told the European parties to the JCPOA.

His tweets came after the Washington Post reported on Wednesday that the Trump administration has threatened to impose tariffs on European automobile imports if Britain, France, and Germany did not formally accuse Iran of breaking the JCPOA.

The three European countries on Tuesday triggered a dispute mechanism under the nuclear deal in order to accuse Iran of violating its terms.

In comments in India on Wednesday, Zarif said the move was legally baseless and politically wrong.
