War deprives Yemen of two decades of development, UN says

The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) says Yemen has lost 21 years of development due to the ongoing war.

Iran PressAmerica: The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) wrote on its Twitter page on Monday night (May 11) that the war, in addition to depriving Yemen of development, has had catastrophic consequences for the spread of infectious diseases such as the coronavirus.

This international body stressed the need to address the urgent needs of Yemeni citizens, such as earning money to buy food and hygiene items, so that they can be empowered to fight the disease.

International organizations have repeatedly warned of the danger of a humanitarian catastrophe with the outbreak of the coronavirus in Yemen due to the country's poor network infrastructure.

So far, 56 people have been infected with coronavirus in areas occupied by the resigned Yemeni government, nine of whom have died.

Due to the poor network of Yemeni health infrastructure, it is not the precise number of the coronavirus infection in the war-torn country.

Saudi Arabia and a number of its regional allies launched the devastating war on Yemen in March 2015 in order to bring the country’s former president Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi back to power and crush the Ansarullah movement.

Since then, over 100,000 people have been killed and more than 3.5 million internally displaced people, returnees, refugees, and asylum seekers are now reliant on regular humanitarian aid to survive, according to the UN.

Approximately 80 percent of Yemen's population, or 24 million people, rely on aid, and 10 million are facing famine.
