Iran Press/America: Immigration advocates gathered Monday night at Boston Logan International Airport to protest the detention of an Iranian student, Shahab Dehghan and revocation of his valid visa. He was due to start his semester at Northeastern University.
An immigration lawyer in Boston Susan Church wrote on social media that the 24-year-old student was arrested after arriving at the airport. He had been in the United States for two years before being requested to get a student visa, and his new visa issuance lasted a year.
Church added that he was informed of the detention through Dehghan's family, but authorities didn’t allow him to speak with him. The MES Live website also reported that the immigration officials have declined to comment, but a spokesman for Northeastern University said the university was aware of the student's entrance ban.
The university said in a statement that Northeastern welcomes thousands of international students and supports them with all means.
The statement added that the university has been contacting federal authorities to find out more about the case and to help its student return to the university.
This is not the first time the US government has acted against Iranian students and recently canceled the visa of about 20 Iranian students without explanation.
The airport agents informed one of the students upon his arrival in the United States that his visa had been revoked and that he had to return on the same flight by the Turkish Airlines that he had used to travel to the US, but since the plane was supposed to return two days later, the student was imprisoned under bad conditions and expelled from the country after two days of humiliation and insult.
Some news sources also reported a three-hour interrogation of an Iranian with Green Card at the John F. Kennedy Airport in New York, adding that agents inspected his cellphone and copied available information. This person was also questioned about his feeling on the assassination of Lieutenant General Qasem Soleimani.
In early January, 60 Iranians who had traveled to Canada were interrogated and detained after their return to the United States.
