Two articles of impeachment unveiled: US Democrats

The US House Judiciary Committee has unveiled formal charges against US President Donald Trump, a key move in the impeachment process against him.

Iran PressAmerica: The first article revealed by committee chief Jerry Nadler accuses Trump of abuse of power and the second accuses him of obstructing Congress.

The president is accused of withholding aid to Ukraine for domestic political reasons.

House Intelligence Chair Adam Schiff said Democrats had "no choice" but to unveil articles of impeachment against US President Trump.

Schiff added that Not impeaching Trump would make US Congress "complicit in the President's abuse of his high office"

If the House of Representatives Judiciary Committee votes to approve the articles later this week, they will then be submitted to the lower chamber for a full vote.

If the articles are approved by the House - which is controlled by the Democrats - an impeachment trial in the Republican-held Senate will take place, possibly early in January.

Republican lawyers from the same House panels argued against Democrats’ impeachment efforts and defended the president’s actions toward Ukraine at the center of the impeachment inquiry.

The impeachment process began in September after an anonymous whistleblower complained to the US Congress about a July phone call by Trump to the president of Ukraine, in which the US president appeared to tie US military assistance to Ukraine launching investigations into Joe Biden's son, Hunter Biden, that would help Donald Trump with his re-election campaign.205/219
