Senior officials from Iran, Russia and Turkey, as guarantors of the Syria peace process, together with United Nations special envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura met and conferred in Geneva, Switzerland on Tuesday.

Europe: According to an Iran Press report,  the four-way meeting was to discuss setting up a committee to draft a new constitution for Syria.

Iran Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has expressed hope that the Geneva meeting will lead to a comprehensive agreement on the new Syrian constitutional committee.

Tweeting on Tuesday night, Zarif urged the western states to facilitate resolution of the Syrian crisis: "In Geneva alongside Russian & Turkish counterparts to move fwd on a constitutional committee to resolve Syria crisis. We always insisted on a political solution led and owned by the Syrians. The West has now been compelled to accept this. But it needs to facilitate; not dictate"

 

The meeting will focus on setting up a 'credible, balanced, and inclusive' committee to draft a new constitution for Syria and to usher in elections.

The Iranian, Russian, and Turkish foreign ministers are seeking the UN's blessing with regards to their joint proposal on Tuesday for a constitutional committee.

The committee is part of the Sochi agreement and will include 50 members nominated by the government, 50 opposition members, and the rest will be independent.

Officials from Turkey, Iran and Russia are in Geneva to announce a 150 member constitutional committee responsible for drafting a new constitution for Syria. 

The final list will be presented to outgoing UN special envoy to Syria, Staffan de Mistura

The centerpiece of UN peace efforts in Syria, the committee would be tasked with negotiating a new post-war constitution that would pave the way to elections aimed at turning the page on more than seven years of devastating war.

 

Also on 28 November, Hossein Jaberi Ansari, a senior advisor to the Iranian foreign minister on political affairs met with Syrian and Russian representatives to Astana peace talks.

Nine meetings were held in Astana, Kazakhstan while the 10th meeting was held in Sochi, Russia this July.

The guarantor states decided to hold the next high-level meeting on Syria in February 2019 in Astana.

Earlier on 13 November, Iranian parliament speaker Ali Larijani in his meeting with a visiting Syrian parliamentary delegation said the enemies of Syria are resorting to political pressure following their military failure in the Arab country.

More than 330,000 people have been killed in Syria and millions have been driven from their homes since the conflict began in March 2011, and the infrastructure of the country has been destroyed.
