An explosion at the Tebyan cultural center in Mazar-e-Sharif, the capital of Balkh province, on Saturday, left 3 people dead and more than 30 others wounded, a dozen journalists among them.

Iran PressAsia: A bomb exploded during an awards ceremony for journalists in Afghanistan, killing at least 3 people and wounding 30 others.

It came two days after a bomb in Mazar-e-Sharif killed the provincial governor, Daud Muzmal, and two others. Four were wounded.

The injured in Saturday’s blast included Najeeb Faryad, a reporter for Aryana News television station, who said he felt like something hit him in the back, followed by a deafening sound before he fell to the ground.

No one has claimed responsibility for the attack but the regional affiliate of the Islamic State group — known as the Islamic State in Khorasan Province — is a key rival of the Taliban.

The militant group has increased its attacks in Afghanistan since the Taliban takeover of the country in August 2021. Targets have included Taliban patrols and members of Afghanistan’s Shiite minority.

Iran condemns terrorist attack

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Tehran, as well as the Consulate General of this country in Mazar-e-Sharif city, strongly condemned the attack by a terrorist on the office of the Afghan Voice Agency (AVA) and the Tebyan Cultural and Social Activities Center in Mazar-e-Sharif.

Following the terrorist attack and bloody explosion this Saturday morning, March 11 at the representative office of Afghan Voice News Agency (AVA) and Tebyan Center in Mazar-e-Sharif, which held a conference about Mahdism and the birth of Imam Zaman (AJ) as well as The appreciation of journalists was being held, Nasser Kanani, the spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran, strongly condemned this cowardly terrorist attack.

On the other hand, the Consulate General of the Islamic Republic of Iran in the city of Mazar-e-Sharif also announced in a statement: "Unfortunately, the meeting place of journalists in the office of the AVA news agency in the city of Mazar-e-Sharif has been targeted by a suicide attack."

The Consulate General of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Mazar-e-Sharif strongly condemns this unfortunate attack, which has resulted in the death and injury of a number of journalists and members of the media, and expresses its sympathy with the injured and their families, as well as the journalist community of Balkh.
