A powerful magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck eastern Tajikistan early Thursday, officials with the US Geological Survey have confirmed.

Iran PressAsia: In 2015 the deadliest earthquake to strike within 300 kilometers of Murghob, Tajikistan was a magnitude 7.5 earthquake that resulted in 399 casualties.

In 1911 a magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck the area, leading to 90 casualties.

Iran's ambassador to Tajikistan Mohammad Taghi Saberi told the Iran Press correspondent: "At five thirty-seven minutes (local time) this morning, a strong earthquake hit the mountainous region and 65 km west of the city of Murghab in Badakhshan province (400 km southeast of the city of Dushanbe, the capital of the Republic of Tajikistan and near the border with China).

So far, no report has been submitted by the relevant authorities about possible damages and casualties.
