IP - More than 2,300 people have died and thousands more are hurt after a massive earthquake rocked Turkey and Syria Monday morning.

Iran PressAsia: The magnitude 7.8 quake was one of the strongest to strike the area in more than a century. Amid severe aftershocks, Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Agency (AFAD) called for international help.

Turkish authorities confirm 1,541 deaths, with another 810 reported in Syria after powerful earthquakes bring thousands of buildings crashing down in both countries.

Turkish Vice President Fuat Oktay says the quake has injured 9,733 people and destroyed 3,471 buildings.

A rescue operation is underway across much of southern Turkey and northern Syria.
