Tehran (IP) - Members of Iran's parliament agreed with the bill for the membership of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).

Iran PressIran News: The Iranian representatives approved the bill on Sunday with 205 votes in favor, 3 votes against, and 4 abstentions out of a total of 237.

Explaining the importance of this bill, Abolfazl Amouei, the spokesman of the National Security Commission of the Parliament, said: "The Shanghai Cooperation Organization centered on the five countries of China, Russia, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan was formed on the basis of the fight against terrorism, and Iran became an observer member of this organization for 15 years. It applied for permanent membership, and finally, at the 22nd meeting in Tashkent, its permanent membership documents were signed by the organization's secretariat."

The representative of Tehran, Shemiranat, Ray, Islamshahr, and Pardis in the parliament continued by stating that in order to become a member of this organization, Iran must recognize the documents that have been approved since the beginning of the establishment of the Shanghai Organization. It has been concluded that the condition of the permanent membership of the Islamic Republic of Iran was the acceptance of these documents as the basis of the organization's actions.

He added: "Of course, from now on, if the commitment document is approved in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, it must go through the current process based on principles 77, 125, and 135, and the cases will be reviewed in public, which is part of the documents regarding cooperation in countering terrorism and separatism."

Amouei also considered Iran's membership in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization as containing an international message and added: "Since Russia and China are members of this organization, the volume of economic exchanges is very high, so this organization will be one of the significant regional organizations, and the message of Iran's multilateralism is conveyed in the field of foreign policy."

In the end, the spokesperson of the Parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Committee called Eurasia and Asia very important in the economic future of the world and stated: "Although this organization was established from the beginning with a security approach, in recent years the development of economic cooperation, banking, communication, and industry at the ministerial levels and confronting unilateral US sanctions is part of its agenda."
