Istanbul (IP) - Turkish President Erdogan called the explosion on the main street in Istanbul an ''attack''; says six people were killed and 81 others were wounded.

Iran PressAsia: Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said that the explosion in Istanbul’s Istiklal Street was caused by a “bomb attack,” adding that six people died in the incident.

Speaking before his departure to the G-20 summit in Indonesia on Sunday, Erdogan said the explosion was a “treacherous attack” and its perpetrators would be punished.

Another 81 were wounded, according to information he received from the Istanbul governor.

A deadly explosion rocked Istanbul’s popular pedestrian Istiklal Avenue at about 4:20 pm (13:20 GMT) on Sunday.

Istanbul Governor Ali Yerlikaya tweeted that the wounded are being treated.

The avenue is a crowded thoroughfare popular with tourists and locals, lined by shops and restaurants. Social media users said shops were shuttered and the avenue closed down.
