Rome (IP) - Tens of thousands of Italians marched through Rome on Saturday, calling for peace in Ukraine and urging Italy to stop sending weapons to help Ukraine in the conflict with Russia.

Iran PressEurope: On Saturday evening, nearly 100,000 people in Rome, the capital of Italy, while holding banners against the war in Ukraine and sending western weapons to Ukraine, also condemned NATO's warmongering policies.

In anti-NATO demonstrations, Italians chanted slogans such as "Stop sending arms to Ukraine," "Italy must leave NATO," and "Urgent peace talks to end the war in Ukraine. "NATO founding member Italy has supported Ukraine since the beginning of the war, including providing it with arms. New far-right Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has said that will not change, and the government is expected to send more weapons soon.

But some, including former prime minister Giuseppe Conte, have said Italy should be stepping up negotiations instead.

Giuseppe Conte, who had participated in the demonstration, warned against the decision of the new government to send military cargo to Ukraine and said that the government should not send weapons to Ukraine again without the parliament ratification.

Conte had previously asked to stop sending more weapons to Ukraine in an interview with Iran Press.

"Our goal should not be to defeat Russia because it is very dangerous and will lead to the escalation of military tension to a world war. And the escalation of military tension should be avoided," the former Prime Minister of Italy noted.
