Tehran (IP)- The Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman congratulated the people of Brazil on the victory of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in the presidential elections.

Iran PressIran news: Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has been elected the next president of Brazil in a stunning comeback following a tight run-off race on Sunday.

His victory heralds a political about-face for Latin America's largest country after four years of Jair Bolsonaro's far-right administration.

Nasser Kanaani, the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman, expressed hope that the long-standing relations with goodwill and mutual respect between Iran and Brazil will be further developed during the presidency of Inacio Lula da Silva.

Pointing out that Iran-Brazil relations will be 100 years old next year, Kanaani noted: "The two countries have had growing cooperation during the past years, especially in economic and trade ties, and considering the many capacities available in bilateral and multilateral relations, the Islamic Republic hopes that these relations will be strengthened and deepened in various dimensions during the presidency of Lula da Silva.

Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva narrowly defeated President Jair Bolsonaro in a runoff election on Sunday that marked a stunning comeback for the leftist former president and the end of Brazil's most right-wing government in decades.
