Khanaqin (IP) - People of Iraq, mostly Shia in the city of Khanaqin in eastern Diyala Governorate, observed Ashura processions.

Iran PressMiddle East: Most of the people in Khanaqin are Shia, and every year they hold Ashura mourning rituals to commemorate Imam Hussain's (AS) martyrdom.

People in the Khanaqin district come out in groups to commemorate Imam Hussain's (AS) martyrdom on Thuesday, reciting elegies and performing Muharram mourning rituals.

Khanaqin is the central city of Khanaqin District in Diyala Governorate, Iraq, near the Iranian border on the Alwand tributary of the Diyala River.

Khanaqin is also situated on the main road Shia pilgrims use when visiting holy Islamic cities like Karbala, Najaf, and Khadhemein.

Every year, at the beginning of the month of Muharram, some Iranian pilgrims arrive in Diyala and Khanaqin provinces to participate in the mourning rituals and the grand procession of Arbaeen March.

In the Battle of Karbala, Imam Hussain fought against an army from Kufa on Muharram 10, 61(October 10, 680 ), who were mercenary soldiers of Yazid ibn Mu'awiya, the second Umayyad caliph.
