With the arrival of the mourning month of Muharram , flag replacement ceremony was held in Karbala, and the red flags of the holy shrine of the Chief of Martyrs, Imam Hussein (peace be upon him), replaced with black ones to mark the start of the month of mourning.

According to an Iran Press report, the flag changing ceremony was held last night after the pray , with presence of hundreds of thousands of followers of the household of purity and piety, inside and around the two holy shrines of  Imam Hussain (peace be upon him) and Hazrat Abol Fazl al-Abbas (peace be upon him), with the area between the two holy shrines known as 'Bayn al-Haramayn'.

The fluttering  black flags of the followers of Imam Hussain (peace be upon him), signified the official start of Muharram mourning ceremonies.
