At the request of Ukraine, the US and six other countries, the U.N. Security Council will hold an emergency meeting in New York on Monday evening.

Iran PressAmerica: The United States, the UK and France have asked the UN Security Council to meet later on Monday on Ukraine after Russia recognized two breakaway regions in eastern Ukraine as independent entities, diplomats said.

The meeting comes at the request of Ukraine, the United States and six other countries. Russia, which currently holds the rotating council presidency, has scheduled it for 9 p.m. New York time. Yet undetermined is whether the meeting will be open or closed.

Russia, as current president of the Security Council, is responsible for scheduling the meeting.

Russia's decision to recognize two breakaway regions in eastern Ukraine as independent and order its army to launch a “peacekeeping operation” into the area has accelerated the crisis.
