Vienna (IP) - The eighth round of talks on lifting the sanctions resumed with the head of the Iranian negotiating team meeting with the EU representative in Vienna, at the Coburg Hotel.

Iran PressEurope: Ali Bagheri Kani, Iran's top negotiator, arrived in Vienna to resume the negotiations with a P4+1 to lift sanctions and met Enrique Mora, the Political Director of the European External Action Service.

He is also scheduled to meet with other heads of the negotiating teams.

After weeks of intensive diplomatic consultations, the eighth round of Vienna negotiations to remove the unlawful sanctions, initiated on December 27, 2021, entered a break on Monday, February 7 and resumed on Monday.

Iran has repeatedly stated that, given that the US has been a violator of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), Washington must return to the agreement with the lifting of sanctions and that the fulfillment of US obligations needs to be verified.

The US State Department is reportedly waiving sanctions on Iran's civilian nuclear program in a technical step necessary to return to the 2015 nuclear agreement.

The resumption of the waiver, ended by the Donald Trump administration in 2020, "would be essential to ensuring Iran's swift compliance" if a new deal on controlling Tehran's nuclear program can be reached in talks in Vienna, a State Department official has told the media.

Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh said: "Naturally, the Islamic Republic of Iran is waiting for the United States to fulfill its duties and obligations regarding the lifting of sanctions in the JCPOA."

Khatibzadeh said: "What the United States must do is to lift all sanctions, including the nuclear issue."

He added: "The news we hear today is about some dimensions of lifting the nuclear sanctions, and everyone knows that this is not enough."

The European Union (EU) said in a statement on Monday that the participants in the Vienna talks, following consultations in their capitals, would continue to discuss the prospect of a possible US return to the JCPOA and how to ensure full and effective implementation of the agreement by all parties.

A draft of the final document had been drawn up, and Iran talks may be '5 minutes from finish', says Mikhail Ulyanov, Permanent Representative of Russia to International Organizations in Vienna.

"At the current advanced stage of the negotiations - a very advanced stage - it is absolutely unacceptable to create unnecessary tension, to jeopardize the achievement of a positive result. We are five minutes from the finish line. And we need to pass this last segment with dignity, quickly and efficiently enough," Ulyanov told Kommersant.

Mikhail Ulyanov said a few points needed further consideration, but the document was on the table in Vienna.
