Iran Press/ Asia: Health authorities in northern China's port city of Tianjin have detected the first case of the Omicron coronavirus variant on the Chinese mainland, while the major manufacturing province of Zhejiang fights its first COVID-19 cluster this year.
The Omicron infection was discovered in a traveler who arrived in Tianjin from overseas on December 9, the Tianjin Daily reported, adding that the patient is currently being treated in isolation in hospital.
Cases of Omicron – first detected in South Africa and labeled a “variant of concern” by the World Health Organization – have now been reported in more than 50 countries. At least one person in the UK has died with Omicron, Boris Johnson said on Monday. 219
