Iran Press/ Europe: The good news announced Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi at a press conference in Vienna on Sunday, EU debates reported.
The IAEA chief was speaking shortly after arriving from weekend talks in Tehran to mitigate plans to reduce cooperation this week.
Iran’s Parliament passed a law in December to partially suspend nuclear inspections if the United States did not lift sanctions imposed under Donald Trump's administration.
“We agreed that in view of the law, and in particular the provision that establishes limitations, we have reached a temporary bilateral technical understanding whereby the agency is going to continue its necessary verification and monitoring activities for a period of up to three months,” Mr. Grossi told journalists.
The arrangement means IAEA inspectors will have less access than under the 2015 deal on Iran’s nuclear program, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action. The number of inspectors will not change.
“We agreed that we are going to keep this understanding we reached under review constantly so if…we want to suspend it or extend it, this can be done,” said Mr. Grossi.
“The hope of the IAEA has been to be able to stabilize a situation which was very unstable,” he added.
On December 1, 2020, Iran's Parliament passed a law obliging the government to limit cooperation with the IAEA if US sanctions continue, and also enabling the Iranian government to take further steps to reduce its obligations under the nuclear deal.
According to Article 6, "The Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran is obliged, in accordance with Articles 36 and 37 of the JCPOA, to suspend regulatory access beyond the Additional Protocol under the JCPOA within 2 months of the adoption of this law."
Kazem Gharibabadi, Iran's ambassador and permanent representative to Vienna-based international organizations, submitted a letter to the IAEA Director-General last Monday regarding suspending Iran's voluntary actions under the JCPOA.
In this regard, the Director-General of the IAEA traveled to Tehran on Saturday night to meet with Ali Akbar Salehi, the Iranian head of Atomic Energy Organization, to discuss the latest developments in Iran's nuclear activities in the context of Iran's reduction JCPOA commitments.
He also met with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif.
