Iran Press/ America: Joe Biden said in a foreign-policy speech at the State Department that he was appointing Timothy Lenderking to be his point person on the conflict.
The US president had signaled during his campaign that he would take a different approach to Yemen and the Saudi-led military campaign there from that of the Trump administration.
Biden also said US support for offensive operations in Yemen would end.
National security adviser Jake Sullivan said the cutoff of support is in line with Biden’s campaign pledge to prevent American weapons from being further used in the Saudi-led military campaign in Yemen. Sullivan said the action includes Biden’s recent decision to halt US arms sales of precision-guided munitions to Riyadh.
Among Lenderking’s first tasks will be to encourage the warring parties to take steps toward a cease-fire.
Saudi Arabia, with the support of the United States, the United Arab Emirates, and several other countries, has launched a military offensive against Yemen since March 2015 and imposed a land, sea, and air blockade on the country.
