US Capitol Police officer dies from injuries in riot

US Capitol Police said late on Thursday that a police officer named Brian Sicknick died due to injuries sustained in response to the riot led by supporters of U President Donald Trump on Wednesday at the US Capitol.

Iran PressAmerica: A United States Capitol Police officer who was seriously injured during violent protests in Washington remained hospitalized on Thursday night, one day after the police were overwhelmed by a pro-Trump mob that stormed the Capitol and disrupted Congress.

"Officer Sicknick was responding to the riots on Wednesday, January 6, 2021, at the U.S. Capitol and was injured while physically engaging with protesters," the police said in a statement, adding he passed away on Thursday night.

Four deaths have been linked to Wednesday’s mayhem. One protester was shot and killed by a Capitol Police officer inside the building, and three other people died after experiencing medical emergencies, officials said.

The officer, had been hit with a fire extinguisher, two law enforcement officials said.

Trump supporters on Wednesday stormed into the Congress building and tried to enter the building as the counting of the electoral college was underway.
