UN Special Rapporteur:

Special Rapporteur of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights said that Qasem Soleimani's assassination is unlawful and violates international human rights law.

Iran PressAmerica: Following the assassination of Lieutenant General Qasem Soliemani, Agnes Callamard, the French human rights expert and Special Rapporteur on extrajudicial of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, on her Twitter wrote that the assassination of Lt Gen Qasem Soleimani and the Deputy Head of Iraq’s anti-terror Popular Mobilization Units (PMU) Abu Mahdi Al-Muhandis is unlawful and violates international human rights law.

She also stressed the US move violated Iraq's territorial integrity as well and that the assassination is outside the context of active hostilities.

"The use of drones or other means for targeted killing is almost never likely to be legal," she added.

Earlier, Callamard reported to the UN Human Rights Council that the United States had failed to provide credible evidence of General Soleimani's imminent threat to American lives and the assassination of a senior Iranian official in a third country is against international standards and the UN Charter.

The IRGC' Quds Force Commander Lieutenant General Qasem Soleimani and the Deputy Head of Iraq’s anti-terror Popular Mobilization Units (PMU) Abu Mahdi Al-Muhandis along with eight other companions had been assassinated by US airstrikes at Baghdad airport on Friday morning, January 3, 2020. Pentagon said in a statement that US President Donald Trump has ordered the attack.

All the officials in Iran, including the Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei strongly condemned the terrorist act, vowing to take revenge on US forces. Three days of public mourning have been announced across the country.

Lieutenant General Soleimani was among the key figures in the fight against terrorism in Syria and Iraq in the past several years.
