A senior Hamas official has congratulated Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Khamenei on his appointment as Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, praising Iran’s stability and reaffirming support for the Palestinian resistance.

Why it matters:

The message highlights the close political and ideological ties between Iran and Palestinian movements as two major actors of the Resistance Axis at a time of heightened regional tensions amid the Israeli-American war of aggression against Iran.

The big picture:

Hamas and other Palestinian resistance groups have long viewed Iran as a key supporter of their struggle against Israeli occupation. Iranian leaders, in turn, have consistently described support for Palestine as a central pillar of the Islamic Republic’s foreign policy.

What he’s saying:

In a letter addressed to Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Khamenei, Hamas Political Council head Mohammad Darwish extended his "warmest and most sincere congratulations” on his selection as Iran’s 3rd leader and successor to Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, who was assassinated in the "criminal Zionist attack.”

Darwish strongly condemned “savage Zionist-American aggression” against Iran and praised the Islamic Republic’s leadership transition, saying it demonstrated the country’s resilience despite complex security conditions.

He expressed confidence in the new leader’s “wisdom and ability to steer the ship of the Islamic Revolution” during a critical period and said Iran would continue supporting the Palestinian people and their resistance.

Go deeper:

The U.S.-Israeli war of aggression against Iran began on February 28, when coordinated attacks targeted Iranian territory and culminated in the assassination of the Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, in an attack on Tehran.

Iranian officials have said continued Israeli-American strikes on civilian infrastructure risk widening the conflict beyond the region.
