Vessels received VHF transmission from Iran's Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) saying "no ship is allowed to pass the Strait of Hormuz," Middle East Eye quotes an official from the European Union's naval mission Aspides.

The EU official on anonymous condition told Reuters that Iran had not formally confirmed any such order.

The news came as the U.S. and Israeli regime carried out joint strikes on different parts of Iran on Saturday morning.

A narrow strategic maritime channel, Strait of Hormuz is around 33km at its narrowest point, between the Musandam peninsula in Oman and Iran, connecting the Persian Gulf to the Arabian Sea.

Hormoz Strait is an important oil chokepoint in the world, with around a fifth of global oil output (roughly 20 million barrels of oil), and a third of global LNG (10 billion cubic feet) pass through it.
