Why it matters:
The summit aims to showcase and discuss the transformative capacity of artificial intelligence in the fields of governance, innovation, and sustainable development, with the participation of presidents and prime ministers from 20 countries, and ministers of communications from 40 countries, policymakers, technology companies, innovators, and experts.
The big picture:
Iran’s Parliament has approved the formation of the national AI organization as an independent body operating under the supervision of the President, aimed at organizing and developing the country’s AI ecosystem.
Also, Iran's proposal to develop standards for artificial intelligence (AI) and large language models (LLMs) has been received, accepted, and will be implemented within a roadmap by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Khameneni's previous remarks on AI:
“I suggest that one of the issues that should be focused on, given attention, and deepened is the issue of Artificial Intelligence, which will play a role in the future administration of the world. Now, whether through the Vice Presidency for Science and Technology or the university, we must take action so that we rank among at least the top ten countries in the world regarding Artificial Intelligence—a position we do not hold today."
"Today, the countries that are top-tier in Artificial Intelligence, besides the US and China and similar nations that are at the top ranks, include some Asian countries and some European countries, but we are not among them. Of course, there seem to be more Asian countries involved; in those top ten rankings, the number of Asian countries is higher. We must take action to reach at least the top ten countries in the world in this regard.”
