UN Secretary General António Guterres has congratulated the President and people of the Islamic Republic of Iran on the victory anniversary of Islamic Revolution.

Why it matters:

The Islamic Revolution is not regarded as a “transient event,” but rather as a consolidated and enduring historical transformation.
The 1979 Revolution is recognized as the starting point of national sovereignty independent from foreign powers.

What UN chief's saying:

  • In a letter addressed to Iran’s President, Guterres extended his warm congratulations on the occasion of 22 Bahman, the National Day of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
  • He described national days as an opportunity to reflect on a country’s historical path, its contributions to the international community, and the ideals shaping its future.
  • The UN chief emphasized that such occasions also remind nations of the importance of dialogue and solidarity in confronting shared global challenges.
  • Referring to the current global situation, Guterres cited ending ongoing wars, preventing new conflicts, confronting the climate crisis, reducing inequalities, and responsibly managing powerful technologies as urgent tests facing the world.

The big picture:

Iran gained independence in 1979 with its governing system being determined by a referendum on the Islamic Republic that won with a 98% of approval. Yet, since then for nearly 5 decades, the Islamic Republic has been struggling with the pressure of the arrogant powers led by the U.S. who seek to bring it back under their dominance.
