Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi says a just resolution of the Palestinian issue is the foundation of sustainable security in West Asia and the world, stressing that Palestine is a true test of international law and global justice.

Why it matters:

Speaking at the 17th Al Jazeera Forum in Doha, Qatar, Araghchi emphasized that the Palestinian issue is not merely a humanitarian or regional concern but a benchmark for assessing the credibility of the international legal order and the global community’s commitment to justice.

The big picture:

Addressing the forum titled “The Palestinian Cause and the Regional Balance of Power in the Context of an Emerging Multipolar World,” Araghchi said developments in the occupied territories, particularly in Gaza, go far beyond a military conflict.

He described the mass killing of civilians and the destruction of vital infrastructure as clear examples of international crimes and flagrant violations of fundamental humanitarian principles, calling the situation an “open and ongoing genocide.”

What He’s Saying:

Araghchi warned that continued impunity for the Israeli regime would have serious regional and global consequences, saying the erosion of the international legal order and the replacement of law with the logic of force pose a direct threat to global peace and stability.

He stressed that these dangers are not confined to Palestine and will extend far beyond the region: "Palestine is not merely a humanitarian or regional issue, but rather the cornerstone of sustainable security in West Asia and a benchmark for the international community's adherence to the principles of international law."

He also said Israel’s actions have become a major source of widespread instability in West Asia, pointing to violations of state sovereignty, assassinations of official figures, and the expansion of military operations amid the absence of international accountability.

Araghchi urged the international community to take practical action, including strong support for legal accountability mechanisms and the imposition of targeted sanctions, particularly an arms embargo against Israel.
