Why it matters:
China’s support matters because it contrasts with Washington’s insistence that Iran's nuclear capabilities should be curbed, a stance which has affected on ongoing U.S.–Iran negotiations. Tehran, however, has repeatedly maintained that it will not negotiate away its right to peaceful nuclear energy, and Beijing’s backing reinforces Iran’s position by underscoring support for diplomatic solutions and the right to peaceful nuclear use amid international pressure.
What they're saying:
During a meeting with Iran’s Deputy Minister for Legal and International Affairs, Kazem Gharibabadi, Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Liu Bin reiterated Beijing’s support for resolving Iran’s nuclear issue peacefully.
“China has always supported a peaceful resolution through political and diplomatic means,” Liu said. He added, “We oppose threats or the use of force and sanctions,” emphasizing that China supports Iran’s legitimate right to peaceful nuclear energy.
Liu also highlighted Iran’s repeated assurances of non-proliferation of nuclear weapons and expressed China’s readiness to cooperate with the international community to advance a sustainable solution for Iran’s nuclear program.
Gharibabadi welcomed China’s impartial and fair stance and stressed Tehran’s interest in maintaining continuous coordination with Beijing.
