Senator Shehu Sani, a Nigerian lawmaker and head of the Civil Rights Congress of Nigeria (CRCN), highlighted Iran’s 1979 Islamic Revolution as a historic uprising against tyranny and foreign domination, describing it as a model for oppressed nations worldwide.

Why it matters:

Sani says the Islamic Revolution was more than a national event. He argues it demonstrates that countries outside the superpower sphere can resist domination, maintain sovereignty, and pursue development even under sanctions and external pressures.

What he’s saying:

Senator Sani described the Iranian Islamic Revolution as “a global symbol of freedom,” emphasizing that while other revolutions have occurred, none have had the same worldwide impact as Iran’s.

He said: "The Islamic Revolution in Iran in 1979 was one of the major historical events in which people rose against tyranny, dictatorship, foreign domination, and colonization. It is a revolution that will continue to be remembered for generations. Prior to this, there were the Cuban, Russian, and American revolutions, among others, but none resonated internationally as a symbol of resilience and liberty as the Iranian Revolution did."

He also underscored Iran’s achievements despite sanctions: "Imagine if Iran had been fully allowed to develop itself; its progress could have been even greater. Yet, despite restrictions, Iran has advanced significantly in science, technology, agriculture, and industry."
