Why it matters:
Zakzaky’s remarks describe the EU decision as part of a wider political and security confrontation between Iran and Western powers, while shifting attention away from international calls to hold the regime of Israel accountable for mass civilian killings in Gaza.
The big picture:
Zakzaky said the EU’s designation clarifies Europe’s role in externally orchestrated riots in Iran that resulted in thousands of civilian and security casualties. He also warned that any military attack on Iran would lead to the defeat of US forces in the Persian Gulf, drawing historical parallels to the collapse of Spain’s naval power.
What he's saying:
"The EU declaration just exposed the complicity of the European countries in the deadly riots. Everyone knows that it wasn't a peaceful protest. It was a riot by some gangs with the aim of destabilizing the whole country. Of course, it started with a peaceful protest, then the rioters entered and started creating anarchy. Nobody can understand somebody making a peaceful protest, but he attacked a hospital and burned it, burned police stations, burned public transport cars, and above all, burned places of worship. Over 300 mosques were burned, and they were all burned in the same way. It clearly showed that it was orchestrated from outside. The fact that the European Union can come out clearly and unanimously condemn the IRGC as a "terrorist organization" means the EU was part of the complicity. Terrorists were defeated by Iran's security; now they have named the IRGC as "terrorists" who defeated the (real) terrorists.
In response to US military deployments in the region, Zakzaky added:
"Well, it shows that we are closing to a point where the world has divided into two: the Arrogant West, leading on one side and the Islamic Republic of Iran on the other, and they think at all costs they have to destroy the Islamic Republic, but they will never be able to do that. They have tried it several times since the revolution for the last 47 years, but each time they failed. The June 2025 war is an example of such defeat. Now they will be defeated once again. Fortunately for them, they called their aircraft carriers "Armada." This was the warship of Spain in those days, and the sinking of that warship of Spain was the end of the power of Spain and the rise of Britain. So, this time around, the United States named their aircraft carriers as "Armada," and it seems they do not know history; they did not know that the Armada ship was sunk in the water, so also this time it will be the second time for Armada to be sunk in the Persian Gulf, God willing."
