A Spanish international relations analyst said in an interview with Iran Press that the collapse of the so-called “rules-based international order” is accelerating, with Venezuela emerging as a key battleground in a wider struggle over global power and influence.

Why it matters:

U.S. foreign policy, particularly toward Venezuela, is framed not around shared rules but around coercion, the violation of Venezuelan sovereignty, and the plundering of the country’s oil resources.

The big picture:

The Western-led global order is losing credibility as countries in the Global South push back against old rules and demand new ones.  In Venezuela, large segments of society reject foreign invasion or intervention as a path to political change. More broadly, the world faces a choice between building a new multipolar system or sliding into a dangerous era defined by raw power and coercion. Latin America, with Venezuela at its center, has emerged as a key arena in this global struggle.

What she's saying:

Political analyst Arantxa Tirado said U.S. policy toward Venezuela has hardened under President Donald Trump’s second term,  with Senator Marco Rubio identified as a key architect of the “maximum pressure” strategy aimed at removing President Nicolás Maduro.

“First Venezuela must fall, and then Cuba and Nicaragua will follow,” she said.

Tirado also highlighted public sentiment inside Venezuela, stressing that a desire for change does not equate to support for foreign military action.

“Wanting change is one thing, and supporting the bombing of one’s own country is something entirely different,” she said.

She added that while some Venezuelans living abroad may support U.S. intervention, attitudes inside the country are markedly different.

“Perhaps some Venezuelans living abroad are more inclined to want Trump to come and bomb the country, but inside Venezuela, in my view, even those sectors of society that feel disillusioned and most desire change certainly do not want that change to come in this way,” Tirado said.
