According to CNN, citing U.S. official sources, the CIA carried out a drone strike earlier this month on a port facility on the coast of Venezuela, marking the first known U.S. attack on a target inside that country.

Why it matters:

The strike represents the first known direct U.S. attack inside Venezuela, highlighting an escalation in Washington’s actions against Venezuelan sovereignty.

The big picture:

U.S. forces have so far carried out more than 30 direct attacks on boats in the Caribbean and the Pacific, resulting in the deaths of more than 100 civilians allegedly linked to drug trafficking.

Washington has so far provided no evidence to substantiate these claims.

What we're hearing:

The U.S. President Donald Trump acknowledged in a December 26 interview that the U.S. had knocked out a “big facility where ships come from” while discussing his administration’s actions against Venezuela.

Asked again on Monday, he said the U.S. struck “the dock area where they load the boats up with drugs.”

U.S. authorities claim the dock was allegedly used by the criminal group "Tren de Aragua" to store narcotics and load them onto vessels for international trafficking.
