Iran Press/ Iran news: The MPs approved that all Expediency Council and the Supreme National Security Council's members could register for the presidential election.
Previously, the law only allowed the registration of the Expediency Council's secretary and the Supreme National Security Council’s secretary.
Members of the Islamic Consultative Assembly of Iran opposed the proposal to lift the ban on military registration to run for the presidential election.
At today's parliament open session, Bostanabad MP Gholamreza Nouri-Ghezeljeh had suggested that senior commanders of the armed forces with the rank of major general and above would be allowed to run for the presidency, which was opposed by the MPs.
Following the Presidential Election Law's amendment, the MPs approved the terms of the presidential candidates.
Out of a total of 242 MPs present, the parliament agreed with the specific and general terms of the presidential candidates with 151 votes in favor, 35 against, and 14 abstentions.
The terms are as follows:
Specific terms include:
Being a religious and political figure
Being of Iranian origin and not having citizenship and residency in other countries in the past and present
Having managerial skills and prudence
Having good records, trustworthiness, and piety
Believing in the principles of the Islamic Republic of Iran and the religion of the country
General terms include:
Having at least a master's degree or equivalent
Minimum age of 40 and a maximum 70
Enjoying health and physical and mental ability
Having military service card or exemption of military service card
Having no criminal conviction and no deprivation of social rights
Having no bad security record
Not having effectiveness in consolidating the former regime and not having its dependency
Having no history of drug use or addiction
Having at least 6 years of experience in government bodies such as being one of the three chairmen or deputy of the National Security Council, members of the Expediency Council, and the like.
