Amichai Chikli, Israel’s Minister for Diaspora Affairs, declared on Tuesday night that war with Syria is “inevitable,” as Israeli military incursions and airstrikes inside Syrian territory intensify.

Why it matters:

This is the first explicit statement from an Israeli cabinet member signaling confrontation with Syria. Israel has repeatedly carried out ground incursions and airstrikes in recent months, killing civilians and damaging Syrian military positions.

 The big picture:

Syria’s interim government is not seen as a direct military threat to Israel, but pro‑Gaza slogans during Syrian military parades have alarmed Tel Aviv.

Recent Israeli actions include a November 28 airstrike on Beit Jinn in the Damascus countryside that killed 13 Syrians.

On Tuesday, three civilians were injured when Israeli forces opened fire during a patrol incursion into Khan Arnabeh in Quneitra.

 What he’s saying:

Reacting to images of Syrian soldiers marching and chanting in support of Gaza, Chikli wrote on X: “War is inevitable.”
