Why it matters:
The meeting in Tehran focuses on expanding joint research cooperation among BRICS members, advancing mechanisms for defining and funding mega-science projects, and strengthening the role of research infrastructures as drivers of innovation, sustainable development, and scientific diplomacy.
The big picture:
In line with BRICS’s long-term vision of boosting scientific and technological integration and reducing reliance on Western infrastructures, this gathering supports knowledge exchange, joint innovation, and coordinated development in strategic fields such as AI and renewable energy.
The BRICS Working Group on Research Infrastructures and Mega-Science Projects was established in 2015 during the third BRICS Meeting of Ministers of Science, Technology, and Innovation.
What they're saying:
During the opening session, representatives from BRICS member states, including India, China, Russia, Brazil, and South Africa, together with Iranian officials as hosts, participated either in person or virtually and delivered their opening remarks.
Brazil's Chargé d’Affaires in Iran, Felipe Flores Pinto:
"The active participation of Iran in BRICS has enriched enormously the dialogue of such relevant group of nations. I would like to congratulate the organizers and hosts, especially the Center for Progress and Development of Iran, an organization that, according to my colleagues in Basilia testify, has been deeply committed to the agenda set for the BRICS Science Technology and Innovation Cooperation."
The Indian representative, who participated in the session virtually, said in his remarks:
"In recent years, the global scientific landscape has evolved rapidly. Breakthroughs in Quantum technologies, artificial intelligence, biotechnology, advanced materials, and climate research are reshaping the way nations work and innovate. At the same time, we face shared challenges: climate change, energy transitions, pandemics, and the need for sustainable development. These challenges demand collective scientific solutions, and BRICS is uniquely positioned to provide them."
What comes next:
In the coming days, the BRICS meeting will continue with expert sessions, reviews of joint projects, and planning for future cooperation. Representatives will discuss proposals and finalize a cooperation framework. The program also includes visits to Iran’s leading scientific centers to deepen insight into the country’s research capabilities and expand international collaboration.
