Sheikh Naim Qassem, Secretary-General of Hezbollah, said Lebanon faces “dangerous expansionist aggression” from Israel and must confront it with all available means.

Why it matters:

His remarks highlight Hezbollah’s positioning as both a religious and military resistance movement, linking current threats to a broader narrative of sacrifice and struggle.

The big picture:

The remarks were delivered during the “Najee’ wa Medad” ceremony in Beirut’s southern suburb, honouring scholars killed in the cause of resistance. At the same time, Israel violates agreements and pursues expansionist aims in South Lebanon.

What he's saying:

Qassem tied the legacy of martyred clerics to Hezbollah’s mission, emphasising both spiritual and military jihad.

He recalled the role of prominent figures like Sayyed Abbas Mousawi and Sheikh Ragheb Harb as pioneers of the resistance.

He referred to Hezbollah’s alliances, including its 2006 partnership with the Free Patriotic Movement, as examples of cross‑sectarian unity.

Qassem stated that Hezbollah’s work is rooted in completing religion, adhering to Islamic principles, and waging jihad, noting that 15 clerics, 41 seminary students, and 39 children of scholars have been killed.
