Iran is holding nationwide funeral processions on Monday for 300 unknown martyrs from the  Sacred Defense (Iran-Iraq War), including 100 in Tehran, as the ceremonies coincide with the anniversary of the martyrdom of Hazrat Fatimah (SA).

Why it matters:

The nationwide ceremonies highlight the enduring cultural and political significance of the Sacred Defense in Iranian public life, as well as the continued return of newly recovered remains, four decades after the conflict.

The big picture:

Cities across Iran have prepared processions, vigils, and burial ceremonies for martyrs whose remains were recently recovered from battlefields, including Majnoon Island, Shalamcheh, and other key fronts. Crowds from provinces such as Golestan, Qom, Fars, Sistan and Baluchestan, Ardabil, East Azerbaijan, and others attended.

What officials are saying:

Authorities and organizers say Monday’s events are meant to honor the sacrifice of those who fell in operations such as Kheibar, Karbala-4, Karbala-5, Valfajr-1, and Enemy Offensive ’67, describing the martyrs as a symbol of unity and national resilience.
